Phylum: Chromophycota
Class: Phaeophyceae
Order: Fucales
Family: Fucaceae
Fucus serratus has a less prominent midrib than Fucus vesiculosus but has no bladders along the frond and only growing to a typical 60cm in length. The edge of the fronds has a distinctive serrated appearance leading to rather obvious scientific and common names. Found on the lower shore F.serratus can form part of the classic rocky shore zonation system.
