Description

Fucus vesiculosus has a prominent mid-rib and pairs of nearly spherical bladders along the frond.  It is often found in similar areas as Ascophylum nodosum but further up the shore than Fucus serratus.  It is common in the brackish water of estuaries and can therefore be found along most of the Essex coast.  It uses any hard surface as an attachment point, even utilising small stones.  Living up to 5 years F.vesiculosus can grow up to 1 metre in length.
