Ligia oceanica (Common Sea Slater)

Ligia oceanica is a large isopod growing up to 30mm in length. From above the body appears to be roughly oval in shape with it's width being approximately 1/2 of it's length. It is quite common around all British coasts preferring crevices groynes and other sheltered spots. L.oceanica lives for up to three years and breeds once during the third year. L.oceanica are omnivorous, their diet consisting of shore debris such as decaying seaweed and encrusting diatoms.
