Marine Litter The amount of litter present in the marine environment is an increasing problem with the amount of litter found on beaches over the last 10 years increasing by 80% (1). Each year an estimated one million birds and more than one hundred thousand marine mammals and turtles die because of human litter (2). Some animals eat it mistaking it for food, this then causes a blockage in the animals’ stomach causing it to starve to death. Other animals, such as seals and porpoises, are caught up in floating rubbish that makes it hard for them to swim and catch food so they become weaker and weaker until they too starve to death or drown.
